John Toles – flying bio

Lived and went to school in Moose Jaw during the 1950’s, watched waves of Harvards flying from the base. Interested in model airplanes, then the real thing.

First glider flight in 1958 at Moose Jaw. I served as ground crew for a glider plot with a two seat glider, got to fly with him occasionally. Soloed in a glider with the Moose Jaw club shortly after that. Been flying gliders since and still loving it. Glider instructor rating since 1978

First power training at the Regina Flying Club in 1961.

Currently own a share in a C-172 based at Martensville just out of Saskatoon. On a good day in summer I will fly to Cudworth, tow or fly gliders for the day, then fly home!

Career educator – 32 years classroom teacher, 20 part time years at SIAST (now Sask Polytech) teaching Adult education and Commercial Pilots Ground School.

Currently president of the Saskatoon Soaring Club, a director of the provincial sport governing body Soaring Association of Saskatchewan, past president of the national association Soaring Association of Canada.

Competed in club, provincial, regional and national soaring competitions over the years. Enjoy doing intro flights in gliders as well as instructing, particularly teaching soaring and cross country flying in gliders.

Long time married to a patient and understanding wife Joyanne, but who doesn’t like to fly.
