COPA Flight 10 member Danno Peters is currently in Norway launching sounding rockets as part of the Canada-Norway Rocket exchange program, CaNoRock, sponsored by the Norwegian Space Centre and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Rockets are assembled on the island of Andøya, Norway (300km north of the arctic circle) and are launched over the arctic. The rocket payload, assembly, and launch is fully run by students who receive hands on training from industry professionals.
Danno was chosen to be head of launch operations, and controlled the rocket launch, monitoring air and ship traffic though the use of primary radars, and weather conditions though the use of radiosondes (real time transmission weather balloons). He also served on the rocket physics team creating simulations of the rocket’s flight path and thermal and stress loading to determine the ideal launch configuration.
